Faith Kipyegon is in the form of her life

This past Friday at the Doha Diamond League meeting, Faith Kipyegon ran a blistering 1:57.68 to blow away the field in the women’s 800m. It was a new personal best for Kipyegon. The time makes her the fourth fastest Kenyan woman in this event after Pamela Jelimo, Janeth Jepkosgey and Margaret Wambui. It is also the best time in the world in 2020.

What was most impressive was the way she obliterated the field. With 150 metres left, she shifted to 5th gear, took the lead and left the rest of the field which could not go any higher than 4th gear.

She has been winning races in similar fashion throughout 2020. Whereas she previously focused on the 1500m, in 2020 she has diversified and shown her versatility. She has run two 1000m races in 2020, blowing away very strong fields that included world champion Halima Nakaayi of Uganda and world runner up Raevyn Rogers of the USA. In the process she came very close to breaking the world record that is held by Russian Svetlana Masterkova.

Given her brilliant form in 2020, she is a strong candidate for World Athlete of the year. Not only has she been winning, but she has been winning in impressive fashion.
