Besides Tylor Okari Ongwae who starred for the University of Louisiana at Monroe, there were two other Kenyans who played in the 2013-2014 USA college basketball season: Robinson Odoch Opong who played for Rogers state and Joel Awich who played for California Polytechnic state university known as Cal Poly for short.
Robinson Odoch Opong
Opong joined Rogers state, popularly known as the Hillcats in 2013, having transferred from Long Island University where he had spent two seasons. He left LIU where he only played 4 minutes per game in search of playing time. He found more playing time at RSU, averaging 18.8 minutes and scoring 9.9 points per game. This was his last season in college basketball.
He was born in Nairobi but attended secondary school in Quebec, Canada. In Canada he played for Cegep de Sainte-Foy. he led team to the provincial championship in 2010 and was named the finals Most Valuable Player. He was also named CCAA All-Canadian as a senior.
Joel Awich
This was Joel Awich’s second season in college basketball. As a sophomore, he averaged 17 minutes per game and 4.1 points per game. He is known as an excellent defender. He uses his supreme athleticism to shut down opposing defenders and block shots. But he is often seen on the finishing end of alley-oop dunks. His athleticism is on full display in the video below.
