The Uganda rugby cranes beat Kenya 19-5 in the opening leg of the Elgon cup played at Uganda’s Kyadondo grounds on Saturday April 21.
The defeat was to be expected. Uganda took no chances in their preparation. They had been training as a unit for almost a month. Clearly they are determined to wrest the title they have lost to Kenya for 5 consecutive years.
Kenya on the other hand showed their lack of seriousness by naming the squad only 4 days before the encounter.
Gamewise, Uganda were the better side. Anthony Kinene gave Uganda the lead from a penalty after 9 minutes. Kenya had chances to get back in the game but Kenny Andola and Eden Agero missed penalties in the final 10 minutes before Kinene gave Uganda 6-0 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, winger Bishop Onen ran clear and released Romano Ogwal for the first try of the game.. Anthony Kinene added a penalty and Uganda were up 14-0.
Kenya started to come back into the game and the pressure yeileded a try via Lawrence Buyachi. Justin Kimono rounded up the score with a long range try.
