Kenya Boxing Team Results at the 1978 All Africa Games

The 1978 All Africa games were held in Algiers Algeria. The Kenya boxing team ended with five medals: two gold, one silver and two bronze. The first gold medal came via Light Welterweight Peter Wanyoike who beat Abderahim Soulhi of morocco on points. The second gold medal came from middleweight Stephen Moi who beat Quattara of Upper Volta when the referee stopped the contest in round 3.

Light-Flyweight Stephen Muchoki reached the final but lost to Zambian Francis Musankabala by a 3-2 decision. Bantamweight Douglas Maina and Welterweight Philip Mathenge won the bronze medals.

Kenya finished atop the boxing standings with two gold, one silver and two bronze. Other Nations that did well were Nigeria, Zambia and Ghana which boasted Azumah Nelson, one of the best boxers ever to emerge from the continent of Africa. The three nations also finished with two gold but had a lower medalcount than Kenya.

    1. Whatever happen to ex Kenyan boxer Michael Mawangi.who fought at the 1978 Commonwealth games in Edmonton Canada I met him in the simi finale at the games.
