Kenya boycotted the Olympics in 1976 and 1980. In 1976 Kenya joined other African nations who boycotted the Olympics to protest New Zealand's sporting links with apartheid South Africa. In 1980, Kenya acquiesced to pressure from the United States and boycotted the Olympics to protest the invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR
