The 1979 Africa boxing championships marked the first time that Kenya emerged atop the standings. Kenya had participated in this tournament four times previously and finished 4th, 5th, 4th and and 2nd.
Kenya’s gold medals were won by Saudi Odanga, George Findo, Athman Abdrulrahmani and Ali Athumani. David Wacheru who replaced Stephen Muchoki in the squad, won silver. Muchoki had turned professional a year earlier much to the dismay of Kenya boxing fans. Wacheru won silver as did Philip Mathenge.
