IMBABWE SABLES continue to make the nation proud after
humiliating the Lions of Kenya in an entertaining Victoria
Cup test encounter in front of a full house at Harare Sports
Club yesterday.
The victory over the defending champions means the Sables have triumphed thrice
in three competitive ties in the space of two weeks after earlier dismissing
Uganda and Madagascar also in convincing fashion.Flyhalf Tichafara Makwanya top-scored for Zimbabwe with four conversions and
three penalties while wing Gardner Nechironga planted a brace of tries and
Charles Jiji, Danny Robertson and Jacques Leitao scored one apiece.
The hosts kick-started the match with lots of venom, which pushed the Kenyans to
defend their 22-metre space.
After two straight lineouts both won by experienced lock Costa Dinha, it was
high time for the opener which arrived after six minutes when Danny Robertson
surged forward at terrific speed before laying a pass for the first try by wing
Nechironga.

Old Hararians’ Tichafara Makwanya added two more points with his conversion.
Kenya proved their own mettle with fullback Vincent Mose making an impressive
run past five opponents and another fine move involving Vincent Ongera, Anthony
Mutai and captain Victor Sudi almost bringing the scoreline on par.
Sables debutant Kudakwashe Chiwanza, however, proved a real Sable on the wing
thwarting the visitors’ raids.
Twenty-year-old scrumhalf Jiji was in brilliant form with some hard running and
superb placement of the ball.
Kenya head coach Frank Otieno blamed his team for losing possession when they
needed it the most.
“We congratulate Zimbabwe on their win. My team lost the ball easily and I think
Jiji destroyed us, but we still have Uganda to play and we hope to improve,” he
said.
Dawson was over the moon.
“We thank everyone who played their part and the boys rose to the occasion. It
was a brilliant match through and through,” said the Sables gaffer.
The match was ably handled by South African referee Mark Lawrence while Jiji,
despite being the shortest man on the field, was named the man of the match.

Dennis "Ironman" Mwanja scored two tries and rookie Allan Omuka touched down
but this was not enough as Kenya began their 2011 Victoria Cup campaign on a
losing note, falling to a 42-24 defeat this afternoon at the hands of their
hosts Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club.
The hosts would go 10- 0 up with the opening ten minutes courtesy of a converted
try before Daniel Kiptoo grounded the ball on twenty nine minutes. Vincent Mose
missed the conversion as Kenya cut the deficit to 10-5.
Zimbabwe would go further ahead, courtesy of a penalty and a converted try,
taking a 20-5 lead into the breather.
Kenya were quick off the blocks, Mwanja touching down a minute into the second
half with Mose converting as the scores read 20-12 in favor of the Sables.
The Zimbos stretched their lead three minutes later, a converted try seeing them
edge 27-12 ahead before Mwanja grabbed his brace on fifty four minutes with
Mose’s conversion seeing Kenya eight points adrift at 27-19.
A sixty first minute penalty, two tries and one conversion saw Zimbabwe go 42-19
up before debutant Omuka scored on seventy six minutes, taking the score to
42-24.
The bonus point win saw Zimbabwe stay top of the Victoria Cup log with nine
points from two matches while Kenya, who collected a bonus points after scoring
four tries are second despite the loss. Uganda are bottom, pointless and winless
after one match. |
