Kenya Rugby loses to Germany 43-6

Germany brought their Repechage story to a close with a dominant 43-6 win over Kenya in Marseille on Friday. Sebastian Ferreira led the way with a hat trick bringing consolation smiles to the face of the Schwarze Adler though secretly they will wonder what might have been with a 20-minute stretch against Canada their only letdown.

It was Kenya who opened the scoring through Samuel Oliech, the flyhalf sending over a penalty and the two sides were relatively even in the opening quarter. The strength of the German pack was simply too much for the Simbas, however, and eventually Sebastian Ferreira crashed over with the help of two teammates for the first try.

Oliech landed another three points just a couple minutes shy of the intermission to make it a one-point game. That gap wouldn’t hold to the break, however, as Kenyan discipline allowed Germany to win field possession and their driving maul did the rest, with Kurt Haupt the one to get the credit for the score.

There was no answer for the power of the Germans in the second half. Jaco Otto went over early taking the offload from Ferreira. Steffen Liebig grabbed a long-range finish and then Ferreira got his double from close range. The big flanker got his third as the clock wound down with one last blow from Harris Aounallah on fulltime.

The two sides will now become spectators as Canada play Hong Kong in the tournament finale. Germany will close in second place if the Canadians are successful, while Kenya are assured fourth with no wins from their three matches.
