Nick Mwendwa was elected FKF Chairman in February of 2016. Prior to that he had been the owner of Kariobangi Sharks, a second tier team. He first rose to prominence when he was appointed by Sam Nyamweya to run the FKF premier league, a league thatw as created to rival the Kenya premier league. He used that platform to raise his profile. A year after that appointment, he won the FKF elections in a landslide.
