1964 marked the first time that newly independent Kenya participated in the Africa boxing championships. The tournament was held in Accra Ghana.
Philip Waruinge was the only Kenyan to bag a gold medal. He would go on to become Kenya’s most decorated boxer. John Olulu was the only Kenya to bag a silver medal.
Kenya finished tied for fourth position behind Egypt, Ghana and Nigeria. Not a bad start for newly independent Kenya.
