1976 Kenya Football League

Gor Mahia won the 1976 Kenya Football League with an unbeaten record. They were boosted by new signings Jerry Imbo and Maurice Ochieng plus regulars like Andrew Obunga, Allan Thigo and James Ogolla “Kadir”

Allan Thigo was a player and also head coach. Winning the league unbeaten as player-coach cemented his place as a Kenyan football legend.

Luo Union wins the CECAFA Club Cup

Luo Union FC won the 1976 CECAFA club cup. On their way they beat Uganda champions Express FC 2-1 before beating Somalia champions MBC 1-0. In the semi-finals, Luo Union beat Tanzanian champions Mseto Sports 5-0, to set up an epic final against defending champions, Young Africans of Tanzania.

The final was played in front of 20,000 fans at Mombasa municipal stadium. Yanga took an early lead, scoring after 5 minutes. s then Luo Union fought back. On the stroke of half time, overlapping defender Sospeter Otin sent in a long ball into the Yanga penalty area which striker Charles Ochieng volleyed into the net. William “Chege” Ouma scored the winner, after a pass from Fred Siranga. Ouma Chege was to tournament’s top scorer with 6 goals.
