Ndiku and Choge lead Kenya’s World Indoors team

Ndiku beat Lagat to win in 2015

The Kenya team for the 2016 world indoor championships has been named. Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku will be back to defend the title he won in 2015. Joining him in the 3000m will be resurgent veteran Augustin Choge who has been saddled by injuries in the past few years but appears to be rounding back to the form that saw him win the 2006 commonwealth games gold medal in the 5000m when aged only 19. Choge beat a strong field at the PSD Bank Indoor Meeting in Dusseldorf to win the men’s 3000m race in a world leading time of 7:39.23. In the process he beat current Commonwealth games champion Caleb Ndiku into second place. The win secured him a wildcard by topping the standings for that discipline in the IAAF World Indoor Tour. They will be joined by 2013 world 5000m bronze medallist Isiah Koech.

Betsy Saina, who recently clocked a world-leading time over 5000m, will contest the 3000m. World junior champion Margaret Wambui has been named in the 800m.

Timothy Kitum who looked like a promising runner when he won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics when aged only 18, will compete in the 800m. Margaret Wambui Nyairera a former junior world champion, represents Kenya’s hopes in the women’s 800.
