Kenya women swept all three podium positions at the 2016 world half marathon championships. For the first 10 km of the race it appeared the Ethiopian duo of Gudeta and Yalew would challenge the Kenyan trio of Jepchirchir, Limo and Ngugi. However as the pace increased over the last 3 km, the Ethiopians fell off the pace. Limo then made a move but Jepchirichir closed her down in the driving rain to win in 1:07:31, well off the personal best she set earlier this year.
For the sixth time in the past eight editions, Kenya took team gold. Their aggregate time of 3:22:59 is the second-fastest in the history of the championships. Ethiopia, team winners in the past two Olympic years, was second this time round. And for the ninth successive edition, Japan took team bronze.
