Kenya qualified for the second round and achieved their highest ever FIFA
ranking (79). However after round 1, coach Francis Kimanzi who was also the
Mathare United coach quit his job at the behest of his boss Bob Munro who was at
loggerheads with FKF chairman Mohamed Hatimy. The German Antoine Hey was hired
to replace Kimanzi. Hey was at loggerheads with many players, most notably
Dennis Oliech whom he left out of several games. Hey was finally fired due to
public demand and replaced by Twahir Muhiddin. Oliech was only re-instated for
the final match against Nigeria.

In the final match, Kenya completely outplayed Nigeria with Oliech giving Joseph
Yobo and the rest of the defence a torrid time with assistance from Emmanuel
Ake. Two of Nigeria's goals were scored from offside positions much to the
chagrin of the home fans who responded by throwing water bottles onto the field
