Augustin Choge returning to form

Augustin Choge beat a strong field at the PSD Bank Indoor Meeting in Dusseldorf to win the men’s 3000m race in a world leading time of 7:39.23. In the process he beat current Commonwealth games champion Caleb Ndiku into second place.

Choge had recently demonstrated that he was back from the injury problems which bedevilled him in 2015 with a strong performance at the Kenyan Police Cross Country Championships, where he finished second, and he looked sharp in his first indoor outing of the year.

Choge’s career looked very promising back in 2006 when at age 19, he won the 5000m gold medal at the Commonwealth games, beating Australian Craig Mottram much to the disappointment of the huge crowd that was wildly cheering Mottram. Since then his form has been erratic.

New sensation Elijah Motonei Manangoi was also impressive in winning the 1500m. He held off his Kenyan compatriot Bethwell Birgen over a ferocious last lap to win in a world-leading 3:39.77.
